When OCA Founder Kung-Lee Wang formed the OCA Business Advisory Council in 1980, it was an expansion of his vision that OCA's mission could be furthered advanced by creating strong and lasting partnerships with America's corporate sector.

These partnerships were vital to the goal of recognizing and acknowledging the contributions of Asian Pacific Americans in improving the social, political and economic wellbeing of all Americans. As a vital link to the business community, the BAC provides financial, professional and corporate guidance to OCA through key representatives from major corporations located around the country.

In 1982, the first BAC Asian American banquet was held in Los Angeles, California, to honor Asian Pacific Americans for achievement in the fields of science and engineering. Subsequent banquets were held every other year for the next few years across the country. In 1991, the first Annual National Asian Pacific American Corporate Achievement Awards (in its current format) was held in San Francisco to recognize APAs for excellence, achievement and leadership in the corporate sector. Each year, companies have an opportunity to nominate one of their own Asian Pacific American employees for their accomplishments and contributions.

Over the years, the awards have come to also include recognition to one recipient for Community Service and to one company as the Corporate Partner of the Year.
