As a student at KU Anna was involved on campus as the co-founder of Students With Intersecting Lenses (SWIRL), the university’s first biracial, multi-racial, and multicultural student group, was a member of the KU & Haskell Women of Color Collective, helped coordinate and facilitate KU’s first annual Asian Leadership Summit, and served as a member of the KU Honors Program’s Diversity & Equity Think Tank sessions.

Ruby Samuel recently graduated from Salt Lake Community College with an Associate of Science and will be heading to the University of Utah to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She was born in Tamil Nadu, India and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah 9 years ago. Her interest in APIA related issues began when she joined the Asian American Student Association (AASA) at the University of Utah. This past year she interned with ACLU of Utah and had the opportunity to learn about racial injustice within the prison system.

Her participation in passing a bill on the Utah Capitol Senate floor as part of the Utah Intercollegiate legislature (a simulated legislative process experience) helped her decide to pursue a degree in political science. As co-founder of South Asian Sensation, a Bollywood dance team at University of Utah, her group fundraised $4,000 to donate to those affected by the Nepal earthquake in 2015. She’s very excited to learn more about the APIA Advocacy community and their work.

Her other interests include: any outdoor activities, night cruises, exploring the city, dancing, and finding cheap Asian eats (#internlife!).

Ruby is an Membership & Communications Intern at OCA National Center.
